    Slow benefit, April 15, 2013

Update: Changed my rating from 4 stars to 3.
Late August and one of the comm units wouldn’t turn off after a ride. Later on it twisted itself off and then wouldn’t turn on.
It took nearly a week to get a response from benefit. One comm unit will need replacing.

Three of us on open sportbikes (no fairings) used these on a recent 1,000 mile trip. In synopsis they worked fantastic. The noise canceling, autovox, intercom and GPS audio were impressive, and we’re a trying group to impress. Depending on the helmet and how the speakers are installed they are excellent up to 70-80mph.

    There were some challenges:
The instructions (from two different boxes) were frustrating. We couldn’t get them to pair up – eventually we just kept trying different combinations of button pressing and holding and got them to work. The “Resolution+Up” on the main unit and “Resolution+Down” on secondary units instructions need retesting and rewriting.

They take a few seconds to connect to each other every time they’re shut off and then powered back on. There is an audible alert the unit twisted on but nothing when they have connected to each other.

After some inactivity on the intercom (time unknown) they go into standby mode (no audible alert) and you don’t know no one else can hear you until no one answers back. You then need to press the UP button (a release tone alert happens) to reconnect the intercoms and wait a few seconds (again, no audible alert) .

I only rated 4 stars since one user had to try 3 different helmets to get the unit to work. We got them to work on an Arai, a Shoei and a Suomy.

I’ll be buying some extra speakers sets to wire other helmets I have.

I did alot of research previous to choosing the HBC200. I did not choose the HBC 100 because it has basically no array on it. I also did not want a boom mike in my helmet due to reviews that were less than positive for systems that use that type of set up. I am very pleased I chose the HBC200. First it was packaged very nice and all items are protected well, second the quality is very excellent, third the set up was very simple. We used these on our ATV’s and could hear each other straightforwardly. The array seemed to fluctuate from .25 to .50 miles. When we tested them, it was snowing pretty hard, so my guess is on a more clear day they would be surpass. I also plot to get the adapters that allow the use of longer array 2-way radios for even longer array. Bottom line is they worked perfectly out of the box with smallest set up time. We have both the iphone and the Samsung Galaxy SIII and set up was simple for both.

Excellent for bike to bike, poor as passenger intercom, June 20, 2013

Bought these to replace our ancient Scala Rider Q2 sets.

    The excellent:

Nice build quality, simple installation, comfortable fit. Works quite well when the headsets are separated by several feet or more.

    The terrible:

Nearly useless as a rider / passenger intercom. The passenger’s headset picks up the rider’s voice in the microphones, and the result is a terrible echo or feedback. Makes communication nearly impossible.

    The end:

Do not hesitate to buy this product for bike to bike communications, but do not buy this product for rider to passenger communication.
