Greatest tire ever!,
The tires themselves arrived bundled together with straps and I was initially alarmed at the exposure they faced, but an extremely careful inspection yielded no evidence of hurt or flaws caused by either shipping or manufacturing. The sidewalls are extremely tough, yet supple enough to permit mounting without resorting to whatever thing farthest. They went on the bike without any surprises, and a quick check for static balance showed no sticky weights were required – spot-on!
The tread design is nothing small of incredible, and every rider that catches a glimpse when you’re parked will find themselves drawn in for closer examine. The rear tire has this clean zig-zag pattern in the center, interrupted by circular wells at every apex to permit water evacuation. The front tire has these incredible lines cut laterally across the face of the tire, effectively turning the entire thing into dozens and dozens of have fun blocks. It looks odd in pictures and in person it’s unquestionably fascinating.
Be extremely careful on the first test ride. When groundbreaking new, they went quite a lot under seat until scrubbed in. I had ridden for thousands of miles on my ancient tires, which were bald in the front and effectively a square block on the rear. The ancient tires started to lean, then stopped when up against the sharp square part. After pressing on the bars harder, it quickly dropped over without any feedback, making for a pretty uncomfortable cornering experience. When at the limit (which wasn’t even at a high speed), the front end would push very hard, without any feedback when it was getting close to breaking traction. In comparison, the first tight turn on the Pilot Road 3s was INCREDIBLE – the bike instantly flicked over with only the slightest input on the bars and just gripped and gripped forever. There was buckets of communication across every inch of lean throughout their entire array, and the increase in traction was nothing small of intoxicating.
The Pilot Road 3s are a dual compound tire – they have a much harder compound in the center of the tread for longevity during commuting, and the remaining third on either edge is the same compound as the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT, which is a very sticky race-ready tire. You can really feel the transition between commute compound and 2CT sticky compound when you’re monument up the canyons, which is incredible when they’re nice and warmed up. When hot, you can really directly abide by the change in compound if you poke at various parts of the tread with a fingernail. Even with the blended part of 2CT on the edge, the Pilot Road 3 is not a substitution for a right super-sticky tire, so don’t get your hopes up. For me, the reduction in dry traction at farthest lean angles was more than worth it for the farthest increase in wet weather traction with the Pilot Road 3’s tread and compound design.
In closing, the Pilot Road 3 is an unquestionably stunning tire and the exact choice for the rider that needs a tire that will go in any and all conditions, with no compromises for grip when some spirited riding beckons. When I was shopping, I had really narrowed down my selection between the Pilot Road 3 and a full 100% racing compound tire. I’m glad I went with these, because a few weeks after installing them I was caught in a rainstorm with a buddy that had racing tires on his bike. He was not having fun and had to slow way down, saying that he was breaking traction everywhere and eyeballing paint strips in the road, argumentative that rolling over them was like hitting ice. Meanwhile I was having a blast, digging deep into every corner and splashing puddles like a kid. I have no regrets about these, and when I wear these out I’m certainly ordering another set!

Fantastic Ride,
Also if you lay on the throttle when it has been raining you can def tell when you go from the harder rubber to the softer. So be careful out there. It just might send you for a loop if your not careful.
