Useless due to being proportioned incorrectly., October 10, 2013
    By
    (REAL NAME)

These would have been fantastic if the knee armor wasn’t several inches above my knee, even with the pads in the lowest position.

You might reckon that since the knee armor is so absurdly far above my knee, that I accidentally ordered pants two or three sizes too small. Really, the pant legs were several inches longer than my legs, dragging along the ground when walking and long enough to get in the way when riding on a cruiser style bike. The waist was also a small too huge so that I had to tighten it all the way down.

You might reckon, no problem–defective pants, get a refund or exchange through Amazon, no problem! Unfortunately, I bought through the Amazon seller Dirt bike Superstore. They refused to acknowledge the problem, insisting that it was my fault for purchasing the incorrect size. After going back and fourth several times, and attempting to result in Amazon in, I eventually had to pay full shipping (these are not cheap to ship) to return the pants.

It seems like Dirt bike Superstore knows that there are really very few people who have a ankle-to-knee part that is twice as long than their knee-to-hip part (which is the only way these would fit), so they are just hoping that if they make returns trying enough, people will give up and they can go some product.

I won’t take out any stars from this review due to my poor experience with Dirt bike Superstore–that’s a separate issue related to the seller not the product. But the incorrect proportions lonely brings this down to two stars.

Assuming you’re ok with no knee armor, you can take out the knee armor and subdue use these pants–with that in mind, these pants are decent, but I did have a few more minor annoyances in the three days I wore them.

The zippers for the leg are not simple to zip and unzip. There is a seam that covers the full part of the zipper which is velcroed together, so you have to pull the velcro apart as you unzip. Also the zipper got stuck on itself frequently.

I also had an issue where the front of the pants dug into my stomach while riding, to the point that I frequently had to exit the freeway and attempt to readjust. In the end, the only way to ride comfortably was to tighten the waist as much as doable and to sag. Even with the sagging, the knees were subdue too high, and it made the bottom of the pants go even farther below my shoes.

A propos the sizing: I’m 5’11” and lanky. I normally wear 30×30 pants. According to the Joe Rocket sizing chart ([...] the closest thing to my size is a 30×32, which is “Small Small”, which is what I ordered. As mentioned, the overall part was much too long while the knee height was much too small. I suggest you order a size that is too tall and figure out some way to bunch up the pants at the bottom and take the overpants off immediately when done riding, you’re not going to be walking at all in these without tripping over them.

    Terrible:
    Misproportioned knee height: -3 stars
    Zipper annoyances: -.5 stars
    Stomach digging: -1 stars
Poor experience with Dirt bike Superstore seller: [not factored into star rating]

    Excellent:
Skill to place on and take off while wearing shoes: +1 star
    Hip armor: +.5 stars

    Whole:
    2/5 stars

Crashed in Joe Rocket Phoenix Gear, April 7, 2013
    By

In response to a request for a review of how this material does in a blow. I was rear finished by a mini van while going about 35 mph a few years ago and did my best super man impersonation off my bike. I was wearing the Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket (maybe version 2.0 at the time) and regular denim jeans. I was nothing but impressed with how the Phoenix jacket protected me. The only hurt I received on my upper body was to my left elbow. I was not wearing the elbow straps tightened and the sleeve twisted such that I finished up sliding on my elbow with the thinner, inner elbow material out. I had some road rash, but not too terrible. I must have slid a honest amount on my back. The back of the jacket was heavily abraded, but I did not have any injury to my back. The jeans I was wearing tore through pretty well and I had a cut up knee and hip. I am confident in wearing the Joe Rocket Phoenix gear and similar products from other manufacturers. Since that wreck I am not comfortable riding without this type of overpants. I currently wear Firstgear “air” overpants. At the time I bought the Firstgear pants the Joe Rocket pants had a side zipper that only went up to the knee, making it more trying to place on and take off the pants. The Phoenix pants are more comfortable and cooler once on, so if they make them with a full side zipper I might try them again.

Fantastic Summer Pants for Those Seeking Extra Protection, September 9, 2012
    By
    (VINE VOICE)

    Verified Buy(What’s this?)
For warm weather these are fantastic pants. I know, I’ve worn these in 110+ degree Arizona heat on several occasions. At these temps, even shorts and a t-shirt are hot, so it would not be accurate to say they kept me “cool” But, riding was enjoyable, as long as you are moving. Stop lights can be toasty. I wear 34 pants and bought size Generous They fit well at the waist, but are about an inch longer than I’d prefer. I reckon a ordinary would have been too small at the waist. If you are not sure of size, I suggest going larger rather than smaller though.

    Likes
    * I reckon the light affect helps keep them cool. If these were dark I’m sure they’d be much warmer.
    * Excellent protection on knees and hips and material seems very lasting.
    * Workmanship seems first rate.
    * The full part zipper is a nice feature if you are trying to place these on over top of other long pants.

    Dislikes
    * Although the waist fit fine, these are about an inch longer than I’d prefer, even for dirt bike pants. I guess a small too long is surpass than too small though
    * You can adjust knee pad location, but even set at the highest position, the knew pads sit a small low, even with the bent legs in riding position. I may have to modify the knee pad pocket.
    * There is no padding on the rear or sacral area.

Overall I`m very pleased and can recommend these.
