Lightweight, no-slip, and very comfortable,
After reading a lot of reviews on Amazon, JensonUSA.com, and BackCountry.com, I chose to go with the TLD EG 5550 elbow/forearm guards and the KG 5450 knee/shin guard.
In small, the EG 5550 is an exceptional choice. I’m 5’7 / 155lbs, and went with the ordinary size. Using TLD’s measurement charts, ordinary is the size they recommend and it’s a exact fit.
Key benefits:
- Lightweight
- Very breathable
- You honestly forget you’re wearing them
- They will not slip
The only con for these is that because there are no adjustable straps, the measurement needs to be spot on. Likewise, you’ll have difficulty in cold weather trying to slip a thermal base layer sleeve underneath these.
On the knee/shin guard side of things, I went with extra small (according to the sizing chart – that’s what matched), and it was a snug fit. But I felt it slid down when I pedaled so I finished up returning them. There are a lot of fantastic reviews for the KG 5450 so I wouldn’t count it out on my part, but again with no straps it needs to be a dead exact fit.
Although protection is the top priority when it comes to protective armor, comfort is up there too, and the material that TLD uses is exceptional. Because if you’re going to be wearing pads for hours in hot weather, you’re going to want something that isn’t going to drive you idiotic with discomfort.

Small Grom Knee Pads,
The only downside is that they are a small pricy, but you get what you pay for in this case. For me that means having a kid that has taken a few excellent cascade with no injuries to keep him out of the game, a product that has not fallen apart and also looks cool. Money well spent in my book.

Only for light usage,
Bottomline: If you ride aggressively go for something sturdier
